Breaking Down Mental Barriers

Hi everyone! My name is Elena and I'm going to tell you about the 4th session we had here in the College Prep Mentoring class of Monarch Effect Foundation! The topic of that day was about Breaking down mental barriers and overcoming challenges. In this class, we approached what mental barriers are, which, believe me, everyone has one! Whether it is a fear or belief of any kind of topic, all people have at least one. These kinds of barriers keep us trapped and prevent us to reach our goals and move forward. In my case, I have a ton of those, so I can tell you by my own experience, they aren't nice at all. They don't let you do things, and it's kind of frustrating.

We were taught about some concepts that we can use ourselves and influence these barriers. The one I found interesting was the compass of life. In the north you can find our values, and in the south our emotions. It is a great representation of how much we lean into each one on different occasions and helps us to analyze ourselves better. I also learned that there are a lot of types of mental barriers, and, just to mention a few: fear of failure, lack of motivation, pessimism, social comparison, procrastination, perfectionism, Impostor Syndrome, and a lot more. They are created by past experiences, expectations, fears of being judged or limiting beliefs. The time that you notice what type of mental barriers you have, and what has triggered them, it helps a lot to acknowledge them and makes you go out of your comfort zone and finally try something new, that way achieving what you couldn't. Like I said before, I suffer a lot from those, but this technique has helped me a lot, and I have used it in my daily life more than I expected! Give it a try as well! It does make changes!
