thought of the month

What's up this month

"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars."

- Norman Vincent PealeI

I like this quote because it invites us to be ambitious and hard-working. Our goals define a part of who we are and where we are headed, which makes the process key to keep going despite the challenges. I identify with this phrase because, throughout time, I have realized the value of perseverance and a growth mindset. We cannot accurately predict our future because life is full of uncertainty, but what is for sure is that if we work hard enough to pursue our biggest dreams, the results will be big as well, whether or not they are what we planned at the beginning.

what are we celebrating

At the Monarch Effect Foundation, we are celebrating Tessa for her incredible performance at the Powerlifting World Championship in Malta: Flashing white lights blinded me as the moment I had prepared for over months finally passed. Despite all my effort, I felt discouraged and embarrassed on that stage. Even though I placed fourth in my category and won a second-place medal in squats, I wasn’t satisfied. For me, being truly proud of myself means achieving what I set out to do, and this time I didn’t.

It’s been four days since that moment, and although it’s been hard, I’m taking it as an important lesson. I’ve learned that failure leaves room for growth, and I need to keep working hard to improve. I’m grateful to everyone who supported me, and I hope you’ll join me on my next adventure.

student updates

Fernanda's blog: Hello! This past month has been full of enriching experiences. I've been taking virtual French classes and am on the lookout for in-person lessons in San José. A highlight was visiting Isla Espíritu Santo and El Mogote, where I learned about their fascinating history, flora, and fauna.

I've also been working on a surprise project with the foundation, which I can't wait to share with you all. Additionally, I've been moved by the inspiring book "Speaking While Being Female," provided by the foundation. It's one of those reads that stirs deep emotions and brings tears to your eyes.

I look forward to sharing more updates soon! See you later!!

events

Next fundraising event: How do we truly measure success? Is it by the number of donors and donations? The number of scholarships awarded or students enrolled? Or the number of graduates we celebrate? At the Monarch Effect Foundation, success goes beyond the numbers. It's about creating infinite opportunities for students in Los Cabos—opportunities that lead to real, transformative impact. Because success isn't a statistic; it's the difference we make in each student's life. That's the Monarch Effect.

mci this month

Kendra Zimmermann Student 2024: What I expect from the MCI is forming stronger bonds and relationships with the other students by hearing about their experiences. I also look forward to learn from them and their perspectives on their education and life in general. To me, it is almost as having older siblings that set an example of not only who I want to be but that also help me with the goals I want to reach and the situations I should avoid. I look forward to participating in the MCI activities and it’s interactive learning as the other students share and update us on their education journey!

what is monarch reading

Starting in October, the Monarch Effect Foundation offers a dynamic mentoring program designed to support students in their transition to university life. This program pairs students with experienced mentors who provide guidance, advice, and support to navigate the challenges of entering higher education. Key components of the program include academic planning, personal development workshops, and strategies for effective time management and study skills. Grades 11-12.

Speaking While Female -Dana Rubin explores the challenges women face when speaking in public or professional settings due to gender bias. The book highlights the frequent interruptions and dismissals women experience and advocates for creating more inclusive spaces where their voices are heard and respected equally. It showcases 75 extraordinary speeches by American women throughout history, aiming to highlight the often-overlooked voices that have shaped the nation's discourse.

who is our role model

Peter, a fellow student at Hult University in London, is an inspiring role model. Just two years older than me, he has worked hard to grow his startup, CloSwap, which organizes events where people can trade clothes by paying a small fee. The idea targets students in London who want affordable clothing, and its success has grown rapidly. They even won the Mayor of London Entrepreneurship Award, securing £10,000 in funding. Soon, they’ll launch ClOsWAPP, an app for swapping clothes like Tinder. Despite early doubts, Peter and his team have persevered and continue to grow, and I’m excited to see how far they go.

Special monarch friends

For me, it's a privilege to support the Monarch Effect Foundation. This amazing project reminds me that nothing is impossible, a phrase I truly believe in. Helping to give these students the chance to spread their wings is one of the noblest causes I've been a part of. I feel lucky to be able to contribute in some way and be part of the change.

When I was first told that I should be the one rebuilding the website for the foundation, I was a little bit intimidated. When it was time to start, I was still doubting whether I would be able to do the job. I had never done something as big as creating a fully functional website. Building a website is not something you can do in less than a week—it had its ups and downs—but the more I worked on it, the easier it got. Having Lisa by my side to help me along the way was amazing. At first, I felt like I didn’t want to do anything unless she was there for the next step, but as time went by, it became easier for me to do things on my own.

This journey was incredible. It made me believe that I’m capable of doing anything I set my mind to, and, like Lisa taught me, if you don’t know how to do something, you can always learn. This project gave me tools that I’m sure will be useful in the future, but most importantly, it showed me that I can achieve anything I want!

gratitude

I am deeply grateful to my family, my community, and the foundation for giving me the opportunity to attend university. Their unconditional support and trust in me have been crucial in achieving this dream. Thanks to them, I’ve been able to explore new opportunities, learn, and grow in ways I never imagined. This journey has not only broadened my academic horizons but has also enriched my life in many ways. Their generosity and support have been a cornerstone in my path, and I can’t express enough how much it means to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making all of this possibility!
